Somerville ranked 7th on the annual list because of its low unemployment rate (2.8 percent), high median income (more than $104,000), and old-town aesthetics. But it also scored points for embracing the weirder aspects of its history with the What the Fluff? festival and Museum of Bad Art.
"(Somerville) claims some of the most affordable home prices in the area, its school district is well-rated, and according to the crime and safety experts at Safewise, it’s actually one of the safest cities in the country — No. 40, to be exact," Money says in its synopsis for the city.
The only other Northeast city to break the top 10 was Jersey City, NJ.
Atlanta took the top spot as the best place to live in the United States.
Milton was ranked 17th on the list.
"With its tree-lined streets, turn-of-the-century Colonial-style homes, and quaint historic district, Milton seems more like a charming, small town than a bustling suburb of Boston," the website writes. "But don’t let its picturesque qualities fool you. The city of 28,000 has plenty else going for it."
Money scored points for its affordable-for-the-region home prices, low crime, and good schools.
